What does the code P0401 mean?

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system routes some exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce certain emissions and combustion temperature. This code appears when the control module detects less flow than expected through that system.

Common possible causes

Carbon-clogged EGR passages or valve — the most common cause, from normal deposit buildup.
A failing EGR valve or its control solenoid — no longer opens properly.
A failing EGR position sensor — sends a wrong reading even if the valve itself works.
